There are several factors that go into the decision as whether someone would want elect the dental coverage offered by their employer vs purchasing a personal individual or family dental insurance plan. The main factors include, coverage, network of dentists included in the employer plan, and of course cost.
Dental plan coverage can vary greatly from plan to plan so it is always a good idea to take a close look at the employers plan coverage. How does the plan cover preventive services and cleanings? What percentage does the plan cover for x-rays, fillings, root canals, and dental implants. If you have younger children, does the plan include coverage for orthodontics and braces. The Dental Insurance Shop makes it easy to get dental insurance quotes and compare dental insurance plans.
If you have a history, and comfort level with particular dentist, and would like to continue to utilize that dentist, does the new plan cover that dentist as an in-network dental provider? If not, does the plan cover services at an out of network provider, and at what benefit level. The cost of the plan is always a major consideration in the decision whether or not someone should take the company offered dental insurance plan. The cost to the employee can often be offset by a percentage of the monthly premium being paid by the employer. Also, the employer will often allow the employee’s share of the monthly premium to paid through a pre-tax payroll arrangement. This can reduce the actual price to employee by 30% or more.
